Kenshoji Temple

These Enku-butsu at Kensei Temple are the only ones in Yamagata Prefecture.

350 years ago, the traveling monk, Enku went out on a journey and continued to carve statues for people suffering from calamities such as natural disasters and famine. The Enku-butsu are characterized by a rough form that boldly retains chisel marks left by the carving knife and features benevolent smiles. According to temple legend, the statues were said to have been left by the traveling monk as a token of appreciation when he visited Kensei Temple.
