Kumagai Shrine

The divine virtue of Saburoube Kumagai, The birthplace of the rice plant, "Kamenoo"

Along with Dewa Sanzan and Zenpo Temple, Kumagai Shrine has long attracted worshippers as a sacred place in Shonai. Saburoube Kumagai, who is enshrined as a guardian spirit, is a noted historic individual known as the best disciple of Shosetsu Yui during the Keian Incident in the early Edo period and a leader who worked to save people suffering from harsh feudal rule.
The shrine today has an image carved in stone by Saburoube Kumagai himself.
In addition, Kumagai Shrine is also where the rice plant, Kamenoo had its beginnings. Kamenoo spread throughout regions such as Tohoku and Hokuriku. A cenotaph has been erected on the shrine grounds to mark the historical fact.
